Conversations

Recently in the grocery cart:

Galen: Mom, I want more tattoos on my arms (he says with four already on his body).
Me: I think if you have more than four tattoos on you start to look like a hooligan.
Galen & Hayden: [giggles]
Galen: Hooligan? Hooligan? What do you think Mrs. Hooligan?
Galen & Hayden: [more giggles]

Recently in the car:

Galen: I can't wait to live there! [points out the window]
Me: Galen, that's a retirement home.
Galen: I know and I'm going to live there with you when I'm 100.
Me: When you're 100 I'll be really old.
Galen: You mean like an old fart?

Recently before bed:

Galen: I think there is a ghost under my bed.
Me [trying to take the easy approach]: Ghost aren't real. Remember people go to heaven when they die?
Galen [bursting into tears]: But I don't want to go to heaven!
Me: Why?
Galen: Because I will need a mom and you will still be down here!

Recently leaving the house:

Me [frustrated]: Galen put on your shoes now or you can just stay home!
Galen [sympathetically]: Does God feel sad when you yell at me like that?

Five!!!

Yesterday we celebrated Galen's 5th birthday. We started the day with a Transformer theme, including balloons, matching arm bands, and two new transformers. Galen kept referring to himself as "The Birthday Boy" and when asked what he got for his birthday replied "everything I ever wanted!" No that's what we like to hear!!

After opening presents in the morning we packed our bags and headed to Green Bay for indoor waterslides. If there's one thing the McGlynn boys do well, it's water! We floated on the lazy river, went down the slides on tubes, and got soaked by the giant bucket that slowly fills with water until it dumps all over the kids' playground.

Next we stopped at Chuck E. Cheese for pizza and games.

We ended the night at home with chocolate cake and birthday wishes. Mama and daddy sang Happy Birthday while Hayden sang his own version of the abc's. We played with new legos until bedtime and had fun as a family.

Happy Birthday to the best five year-old boy we know!!!

Galen's Fifth Birthday

Dear Galen,

Today you are five years old. Today we celebrated five years of red hair, laughing, the way you smell in the morning, impatience, and delighting in your "little self." When we stand back and look at you today we can only marvel at the person you are becoming. You impress us everyday with your independence and your passion.

Some things we have come to love about you:

You are fiercely stubborn and independent yet you find pure joy in doing things by yourself. You are courageous and competitive yet you have a tender heart just below the surface. You cuss like a sailor and yell at your brother yet ask questions about mortality and God that make us proud of your loving heart. You test you boundaries in everything yet come back to us for hugs and affection.

When you turned four last summer you still seemed like a little boy. But over the last year you have grown so much. This year you learned to write your own name, count to 100 by yourself, go down the water slide at Meade Pool by yourself, and ride your bike without training wheels. You grew from a size 5 to a size 7 and requested name brand shoes (Sketchers) for the first time. You are eager to learn new things everyday and started the summer by saying, "You guys have a lot of things to teach me this summer." You remind us everyday how precious and important it is to be your parents and your family.

We have had difficult moments over the past year but somehow they are hard to recall now. The sweeter moments seem sharper in our memories, more poignant. If we could preserve one memory from this past year it be you coming downstairs in the morning to snuggle into bed with us. It is the only time of day when you are still, close enough to smell and feel your warmth.

Happy Birthday Galen, our first-born, our sweet pea, our little self.

Love,
Mama and Daddy
